Just who benefits from a pub on a motorway?

To open a pub on a motorway is madness. It’s of no benefit to anyone other than the alcohol industry and it’s setting a dangerous precedent.

It’s incredible that a pub is able to sell alcohol from 9am, seven days a week anywhere, let alone at a motorway service station. With the Government reviewing the sale of alcohol at motorway services this could potentially be the first of many across the country.

As charities such as Brake have already said today it is ‘unnecessary’ and ‘risky’. In 2011 there were a total of 390 casualties as a result of drink driving in the North East, 50 of which resulted in death or serious injury. Part of the reason is that our blood alcohol limit in the UK is higher than anywhere else in Europe other than Malta. This could make things even worse.

Alcohol is already far too available and it’s time that we stopped treating it like any other product. It’s a legal drug which continues to cause harm. Increasing the availability of alcohol, which we know drives consumption, is only going to increase the levels of harm we see.

Colin Shevills, Director of Balance.
