The Causes
The North East has a problem with alcohol. Too many people are consuming too much alcohol, too often. It’s threatening our health, wealth and safety and damaging the lives of individuals, families and communities.
A third of north easterners drink above the Government’s recommended limits on a daily or almost daily basis and one in five binge drinks on a weekly basis.
This is storing up major problems for our region. We have the highest rate of alcohol related hospital admissions in the UK and almost half of all violent crime is alcohol related.
As individuals and as organisations, we’re all paying the price because alcohol is too affordable, available and too heavily promoted. We need to address these causes if we are to be successful in tacking the problems of alcohol misuse.
