You may not realise it but alcohol is costing you financially. We don’t just mean the occasional bar bill or the cost of the bottle of wine in your shopping basket.
Essentially our economy is suffering at the hands of alcohol misuse – that’s you, our communities and the North East as a whole.
It is estimated that alcohol related crime and disorder costs England £9-15 billion. Alcohol misuse is also estimated to cost the NHS in England £2.7 billion – comprising of inpatient and day visits, A&E visits, ambulance services, GP consultations and specialist treatment services.

- Alcohol misuse costs the region up to £1.29 billion a year – that’s more than £400 for every man, woman and child.
- The cost alone to the North East NHS is around £225m per year.
- In 2010 the households of the North East spent somewhere in the region of £650 million on alcohol.
