Government support
Support from Government is instrumental in turning the tide of alcohol misuse.
Education and individual responsibility must be supported by greater regulation and legislation.
For example, we know that the vast majority of parents have a responsible attitude when it comes to alcohol and their children – choosing not to be drunk around them or supply them with alcohol.
However, despite the fact that parents are key influences on their children – this may not be enough to dissuade young people from drinking before they are legally, mentally or physically ready.
Government needs to support parents across our region in keeping our children safe from harm. It can do this by restricting alcohol advertising and introducing meaningful price controls that make alcohol unaffordable to our younger drinkers.
